Chapter 19

Kim walked into the cafeteria and hesitated, looking around for anyone she knew. She was nervous, feeling out of place, and almost changed her mind and went back to the barracks to wait for a meal to be delivered. Then she noticed several others sitting alone here and there around the cafeteria. At least she wouldn’t be the only one sitting alone.

She walked over to the serving line and waited her turn.

“Well, hello!” one of the servers called out.

She looked up and recognized him as one of the males that delivered meals to her and Lydia on most days. “Hi,” she said.

“I’m glad to see you out and about,” he said.

Kim nodded. “It was time.”

“Past time. You going to need a meal delivered for your friend later, or you taking one back with you?” he asked.

“She’s with her mate,” Kim said.

“Okay, then that just leaves you. What do you feel like eating?”

“Could I just have some of the vegetables and side dishes?” Kim asked. “I don’t feel like anything heavy tonight.”

“Sure, coming right up,” the male said, taking one of the larger than average plates from a stack beside him and beginning to fill it with a little of every side they had to offer.

Once her plate was filled, he handed it to her and she put it on her tray and continued down the line.

She chose a soft yeast roll with several pats of butter to accompany her dinner, then turned around and looked for a place to sit. There was no longer an empty table. And everyone that had been alone, now had a group of people sitting with them. Except for one male. He sat alone, concentrating on his food, ignoring the world around him. He seemed like the safest bet since if she sat with anyone else, she’d have to interact with all the others, and she really didn’t feel up to it. Truth be told, taking care of Lydia had kept her from having to face her own issues.

Putting one foot in front of the other, she started toward the table on the other side of the room where the lone male sat. When she reached the table, she stood waiting for him to look up at her. But he didn’t. He kept eating, taking his time, eating slowly, savoring each bite, it seemed.

“Hi, I’m Kim. I don’t really have any friends here and was hoping I could sit here with you so I don’t have to be around so many people. You look quiet. Do you mind?”

The male didn’t look up at her, or answer, he just kept eating.

Kim took a step back, preparing to turn and walk away, but the chair just to her left slid out from the table. She looked at it, and realized the male must have used his foot to shove it backward.

“Thank you,” Kim said, her voice not as confident as it had been. But he’d shoved the chair out for her, so, she wasn’t going to walk away now.
